Packing for the 2011 December distribution

October 8, 2011

Beyond the Wall has officially completed packing the donations that will be sent to Colombia for the distribution event in El Talon on December 23rd, 2011.  Since August, most of the weekends for Fernando Nunez Esquiaqui, Adriane Norman, and Juan Esteban Cajigas (board of directors for Beyond the Wall) have consisted of packing and organizing all of the donations.  Throughout this difficult and tiring process, the board became closer as a group, and more plans were made in order to complete the mission in El Talon.  A special thanks goes out to Jennifer Parra, Senior Advisor for the ColSA-UCF group, who volunteered to pack the donations with the board of directors.

Beyond the Wall was present at the 2011 Global Peace Film Festival in Winter Park, Florida this past September 18th, 2011.  Mrs. Wendy Doromal, official sponsor of the Beyond the Wall Club at Timber Creek High School, gave the board of directors the idea of promoting the campaign at the festival's annual street fair.  Beyond the Wall managed to positively promote Beyond the Wall at this special event.  We would like to thank everyone for the continuing support!

Beyond the Wall Club

September 20, 2011

As mentioned in a previous post, Beyond the Wall has spent the beginning of the Fall season preparing partnerships/clubs/alliances in order to complete the El Talon mission for December 2011.  Another example of progress is the creation of the Beyond the Wall Club at Timber Creek High School.  This particular project is very important and interesting, since the club had to be created and club members had to be recruited.  In order to successfully start the club, Mrs. Wendy Doromal became the official sponsor of the Beyond the Wall Club.  Mr. John Wright, Principal of Timber Creek High School, approved the club at an instant.  "Club Rush," which is an event held in the school cafeteria and gives all of Timber Creek's clubs the opportunity to showcase what they do, was very successful, where we managed to get many signatures of support.  Mr. Wright also approved an official presentation to be done during school at the school's performing arts center.  Beyond the Wall has support from the Hispanic Club and Student Government at Timber Creek High School as well.
  • President:  Juan Esteban Cajigas
  • Sponsor:  Mrs. Wendy Doromal
  • Support:  Hispanic Club and Student Government at Timber Creek High School
  • Car washes and an official presentation will be completed by the end of November 2011
  • Community service hours will be provided to all students that become members of the club
With the creation of this club, we are now officially allowed to receive funds for the construction of the park and distribution event/medical mission in El Talon, Colombia on December 23rd, 2011.

Beyond the Wall would like to thank Mrs. Wendy Doromal, Mr. John Wright, the Hispanic Club, and student government for all of the continuing support at Timber Creek High School.  This school is where Beyond the Wall began!

ColSA-UCF

September 15, 2011

After Fernando's trip to Colombia in August, Beyond the Wall's board of directors decided to take a couple of weeks to prepare many events and contact support members in order to successfully complete the mission in El Talon this coming December.  Adriane Norman, Marketing Director for Beyond the Wall, contacted Jennifer Parra, Senior Advisor for ColSA- UCF (Colombian Student Association at the University of Central Florida) in order to reach some sort of partnership. Luckily, Jennifer showed complete support for Beyond the Wall, and an alliance was immediately created.  On September 1st, 2011, Fernando Nunez Esquiaqui, Director of Beyond the Wall, officially presented himself to all the ColSA members and board at their first general meeting; the result was positive feedback and support from everyone.  Luckily, Beyond the Wall has reached an agreement with this organization, and the following events will be organized by ColSA in order to support the Beyond the Wall Campaign:
  • Sunday, November 20th, 2011:  Soccer Tournament at UCF
  • Sunday, November 20th, 2011:  ColSA Party at Gloria's Cafe-Orlando
Aside from the two events mentioned above, ColSA will support Beyond the Wall with packing and presentations/events not organized by them.  The best part of this alliance is that beginning in January 2012, the proper planning will begin to organize a summer 2012 distribution/educational trip to El Talon with ColSA members.

This partnership will be growing within the next couple of months, and Beyond the Wall would like to thank the board members of ColSA-UCF for all of the support: Jennifer Parra, Jessica Barreto, Alanna Sanz, David Echavarria, Alexandra Ruiz, Jenny M. Garces, Favian Torres, and Santiago Duque.

Donations transferred

August 21, 2011

Beyond the Wall has had the complete luck of always having many donations…so much, that it took up the space of a one-car garage.  All of the donations have always been stored in Fernando Nunez Esquiaqui's home; however, since more clothes, shoes, and toys keep getting donated, the space has become rather limited.  Thanks to Mr. Jorge Posada, all of the donations can now be stored in a home at the Sandy Creek neighborhood in east Orlando.  On August 17th, 2011, Juan Esteban Cajigas (Human Resource Manager), Marcos Pluguez, Gabriel Pluguez, and Fernando Nunez Esquiaqui (Director), all went to transfer the donations out of Fernando's home into the one at Sandy Creek.  It took about three to four hours since there were so many, but luckily it was all completed.  A U-Haul truck was used to finish this process.  Beyond the Wall would like to thank the Pluguez brothers and Juan Esteban Cajigas for all the help, and especially Mr. Jorge Posada for his support!

Outcome of trip to Colombia

August 21st, 2011

Fernando and Dr. Jaime Cajigas.

Fernando Nunez Esquiaqui, Director of the Beyond the Wall Campaign, recently traveled to Colombia to continue preparing for the 2011 Christmas distribution in El Talon.  On August 8th, Fernando flew to Cartagena to speak with Mr. Miguel Arnedo, Mayor of the Municipality of Turbaco, Bolivar (where El Talon is located).  The outcome of the meeting with Mr. Arnedo was a generous donation of land in the El Talon area to build a children's park.  This park will be inaugurated on December 23rd, 2011, during the planned distribution.  On August 11th, Fernando flew to Bogota, capital of Colombia, where he met with Dr. Jaime Cajigas, father of Juan Esteban Cajigas, Human Resource Manager for Beyond the Wall.  Dr. Cajigas confirmed full support for the campaign's upcoming distribution.  Fernando returned to Orlando on August 13th, and on August 18th, Dr. Cajigas confirmed that a medical mission will be conducted during the Beyond the Wall distribution/park inauguration on December 23rd, 2011.

The trip to Cartagena and Bogota was very successful, as both a park and a medical mission was confirmed.  Beyond the Wall would like to thank Mr. Miguel Arnedo and Dr. Jaime Cajigas for all the support!

With Mr. Miguel Arnedo, Mayor of Turbaco, Bolivar.

Second Board Meeting

July 11th, 2011

Children of El Talon

On July 6th, 2011, our second board meeting was held, and we finally began making many more decisions that will become noticeable during the next couple of months.  As a group, we decided on the following:

  • Clubs representing Beyond the Wall will be created at Timber Creek High School and at the University of Central Florida.  The purpose of these clubs is to raise awareness about the campaign and to get more followers in the central Florida community.
  • Our official website will become BTWCampaign.com, which will begin to function very soon.
  • Drop boxes will be set around Timber Creek High School, University of Central Florida, Valencia College, and at a main location in Orlando.
  • Our image will change; our aim is to attract more young adults.
  • Presentations will be done at various locations throughout central Florida.  A presentation in Bogota, Colombia is also being planned; however, more information regarding that presentation will be posted soon.
  • A car wash will also be organized to help raise funds for our distribution in Colombia.
  • We will have a "packing week" during August to start organizing the donations that will be sent to Colombia later this year.
Much more information will be posted as we continue to settle our thoughts and decisions.  Thanks to everyone for the support…

Donation Update

June 25th, 2011

Throughout 2011, even though there have been many changes to the campaign, we have still received many of the much needed donations for the residents of El Talon.  So many donations have been received, that we are now going to need to store them at another facility that will be announced soon.  A special thanks goes out to everyone that has donated, such as Edison Gomez, Vickie Pacheco, Lilliana Correa Pinzon, Jan Henderson, Christine Kreutzer, Amy Lerman, Kevin Williams, and many more.

The donations are scheduled to be distributed during the December 23rd, 2011 celebration in El Talon, Colombia.

Official presentation of the Board of Directors

June 6th, 2011

As it was previously mentioned, Beyond the Wall now has a new board of directors.  On June 5th, 2011, the first board meeting was successfully completed after it was postponed one day.  Finally, the presentation of the Beyond the Wall board of directors:

Fernando Nuñez Esquiaqui- Director
Adriane Norman- Marketing Volunteer Manager
Juan Esteban Cajigas- Human Resource Manager

We are still in the process of organizing our ideas, but we are confirming the following:
  • Distribution in El Talon is scheduled to take place on December 23rd, 2011.
  • The Beyond the Wall board will travel to Colombia to participate in this event.
  • A children's park called "Park of the Future" will inaugurate on the same day of the distribution.
Due to the fact that we are still organizing ourselves as a group, more changes will be announced next month, after our second board meeting.

Two months full of future!

May 28th, 2011

After over two months of not posting anything, I have the pleasure to announce that I have spent this time changing the format of Beyond the Wall.  Since March until the beginning of May, I had guidance regarding the future of this campaign.  Rebecca Matos, who is part of the administration at the University of Central Florida, gave me all the much needed advice so Beyond the Wall can continue to grow.  One of the most obvious changes that will be made to my campaign is the creation of a board of directors.  It was a very difficult decision since it is complicated to trust people.  It took me approximately a month and a half to think of and organize a group of candidates to become part of Beyond the Wall.  Luckily, I finally thought of two young students that are perfect for this job.  During the beginning of May, I interviewed them, and I finally chose them.  The new members of the Beyond the Wall board of directors are:

  • Adriane Norman, born in Toledo, Ohio (of Iranian descent), and student at the University of Central Florida.
  • Juan Esteban Cajigas, born in Bogota, Colombia and Junior at Timber Creek High School.
On Saturday, June 4th, we will have our first board meeting, where we will discuss our positions and the future of Beyond the Wall.  As of that date, every decision regarding Beyond the Wall will be done as a group.

I will soon publish more information regarding the date of our future distribution in Colombia, when we will build a children's park in El Talon, and more.  These months have been filled with progress, and I want to thank Mrs. Matos for all the help.  I also want to welcome Adriane Norman and Juan Esteban Cajigas to Beyond the Wall!

Homeless distribution at Lake Eola Park- Orlando

March 8, 2011

In an effort to continue teaching American children about the needs of some people in our society, I have organized another distribution of lunch for the homeless at Lake Eola Park in Downtown Orlando, Florida.  The project consists of fourth and fifth graders preparing lunch (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with juice and chips) at Castle Creek Elementary School during their "Extended Day" after-school program.  The children and I prepared over 40 lunch bags for the homeless on Friday, March 4th, 2011, and distributed them the following day.  The distribution was excellent, and the children all continued to learn about the homeless in Orlando.  "The homeless people were cool.  They were nice and religious.  They're not like you'd expect them to be..." said one fourth grade student after the distribution.  I feel very proud to continue having this partnership with Castle Creek Elementary School's Extended Day program, since it teaches children to appreciate what they have.  It is also clear that Beyond the Wall will help everyone it can...not just the needy in Colombia.  I would like to thank Michelle Senquis, Christine Kreutzer, Verna Williford, the parents of the students that attended the distribution, and of course, all the children that participated in this project.

A good start for 2011

February 22, 2011

After spending the holiday season travelling to Colombia for my distribution in El Talon and later spending the new year in Los Angeles, I have returned to Orlando with the luck of receiving many donations during the first couple of weeks of the year. I have had so much success, that I even had to pick up a box of donations in Los Angeles during the month of February. Furthermore, I also recieved 30 boxes of donations from Edinson Gomez, an Orlando resident that also takes donations to many countries in Latin America. Overall, the donations keep on coming, which means that 2011 will be a year of success for the residents of El Talon. I want to thank everyone that has and continues to donate for the needy in Colombia! I also want to thank all the volunteers that have helped me with my campaign.
