Miss Colombia supported the Beyond the Wall Campaign since the day she participated in my first distribution event in El Talon (Turbaco, Bolivar) and she also sent a video of support for my second project for the benefit of the residents in El Caminito. I had a chance to speak to her the day after she was crowned and as always, she was very kind. To be honest, I thought she was going to be very stuck up with her new title. However, she was very humble and asked about the progress of Beyond the Wall. She also said she was going to do everything possible to be at my next distribution event in Colombia. Natalia, I once again want to congradulate you and I wish you the best of luck in the future. I now have the pleasure to say that a Miss Colombia was at the first Beyond the Wall distribution event.

On July 17th, I received a call from Natalia Navarro Galvis, Miss Bolivar 2009, and she confirmed her presence to the to the Beyond the Wall distribution event in El Talon (Colombia) with me. She was contacted by the Miss Colombia Organization (Concurso Nacional de Belleza), a great sponsor of my campaign. To be completely honest, I never thought Natalia would be interested in my campaign, but the day after we spoke over the phone and I met her at my distribution event, I realized how down to earth and honest she was. The event was not perfect, but she enjoyed it and she stayed for over an hour, which is a lot considering how busy she always is. When she spoke to the people of El Talon, she didn't have a speech planned but she still managed to speak with a lot of energy and positively about my campaign and my goals with the needy in Colombia. What really grabbed my attention was when she told me she would support me in any way possible with my future projects. Since then, Natalia has been supporting my campaign. She is currently making a video of support for Beyond the Wall.

I feel a great amount of appreciation towards the Miss Colombia Organization (Concurso Nacional de Belleza) and with Natalia for their unconditional support; both are always busy, but they manage to take time out for my campaign and needs. We connect because of the social mission both of us have.
I feel it is important to dedicate this post to Natalia; she will compete to be Miss Colombia 2009-2010. Recently, she travelled to Medellin with many other candidates for a photo shoot with Cromos, one of Colombia's most important magazine. The pictures were published a couple of days ago and without a doubt Natalia was one of the best candidates; she was on the cover of last week's edition. Natalia's parents are from Cartagena, but she was born in Barranquilla. When she was a baby she moved to Cartagena and was raised there. She currently attends Florida International University in Miami. She is 5'11, of light skin, has brown eyes, and is very beautiful.
I wish Natalia the best and she really does deserve to be Miss Colombia 2009-2010. I'm not saying that because I know her, but because of her humble personality and physical beauty. Thanks for your unconditional support, Natalia!

El Caminito, a small sector located in Turbaco (Bolivar), Colombia, was chosen as the town the Beyond the Wall Campaign will help and support for the end of the year. El Caminito is located near El Talon, the sector I helped out during the summer. I know I mentioned I would help El Talon in my next project, but this town also needs help. Please remember to donate for the residents of El Caminito by November 15th!

Acting for a Cause

The Beyond the Wall Campaign proudly announces it's new project: "Acting for a Cause". Actors from the University of Rafael Nunez in Cartagena, Colombia will perform a play in the municipality of Turbaco, Bolivar (Colombia), near Cartagena. The play is titled "Receiving the New Student". Many schools from Turbaco will attend the play with their students with one simple condition: each student must bring a gift for a child living under poverty. The gifts received will contribute to the 30 boxes of donations I will send in November. All donations will be distributed in December for the holidays.
This project is different
"Acting for a Cause" is different than my first project in the first half of the year due to many reasons:

This is a sign that Beyond the Wall is growing at a rapid pace. This year, my campaign will have two projects completed in Colombia. That's fast considering the campaign was launched in January when I was seventeen years old.

- I already have support from Natalia Navarro Galvis, Miss Bolivar 2009. She supported my first project and now she is supporting me with this project by sending me a video of support which will be published soon.
- I have the support of the Colombian Civil Defense and the Colombian National Police in Turbaco. During my first project, it took months to receive this type of support.
- New support includes schools from Turbaco. The names of those schools will be announced in a future post.
- It's the first time I run a project with someone else: Teofilo del Rio. Teo, as my family calls him, is a cousin of mine that lives in Colombia and has helped me like no other in the South American country. He has been in charge of informing the project with the actors of the University of Rafael Nunez. He has contacted all the schools in Turbaco that will attend the play. He and I are organizing the play that will be held in Turbaco on October 30th.
- It's the first time an event is held outside Orlando promoting a Beyond the Wall project.

Future Project

It has been almost one month since I arrived from my trip to Colombia and I previously announced the possibility of directing a future project in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, or Guatemala and I have made my final decision: El Talon, Colombia. There are many reasons why I chose El Talon again.
Security: First of all, I have the best intentions with the residents of anywhere I decide to donate. However, my security is very important and I do not want to put that at risk. Wherever I go, including El Talon, there always has to be tight security. People must remember that I am barely eighteen years old and I am responsible for organizing any project and during the planning period, security must be included. Since I am dealing with a delicate town, it must be treated cautiously. If I go to a town that I have never been to, it will be very difficult for me to begin the process of getting to know and investigate the town. El Talon's residents were very well behaved and cooperated well during my campaign; the census I conducted and the distribution event was a total success because of their behavior. I believe that in terms of security, I am not ready to go to another town.
Transportation: El Talon is conveniently located near the home where I stay in when I travel to Colombia. It takes literally 15 minutes to get to El Talon and during my campaign, I had to go there many times. It is very difficult for me to go to a town far from the home where I stay in because the lack of transportation, money (the money used for the campaign is personal), and distance. For example, if I do a project in a town near Maracaibo, Venezuela, where will I get the constant transportation from Maracaibo to the town?
Support: The only place I feel I have family support in Colombia is in Cartagena. Without my family in the area, it would have been somewhat difficult to connect with the local police, newspapers, local organizations, and many more factors. They helped me with the packing, the storage, the connections, the transportation, everything. I do have family in a beautiful area of Colombia called Valle del Cauca, but the only direct family member that supports me there is one aunt. A lot of support is needed in order for me to succeed. I believe that in the future, I wont need this support since I will be better prepared for all the factors mentioned above.
Money: It's pretty obvious that my major issue is the lack of funds. Since I am still not a nonprofit organization, legally I cannot receive any money from anyone. Every project I direct has to be funded with my money. How do I do that? I work with my parents and with the money I earn, I pay for the expenses. During my campaign, I ran out of funds and my parents paid for the rest. Putting Venezuela as an example again, it would be very hard for me to pay for everything mentioned above with my own money. As I gain more experience and as Beyond the Wall continues to grow, the possibility of me going to another country will increase.
Experience: I have many plans for El Talon. During my speech at my distribution event, I mentioned that it was a first step for a long road ahead of me. I not only want to donate clothes, I want to make a permanent difference. I believe that El Talon has serious infrastructure issues that need to be addressed as soon as possible. However, clothes is still important and I plan to continue donating. Once I feel like I have enough experience, I will direct a project in another region. If I gain experience in El Talon, it will prepare me for a successful project outside Colombia.
I don't only think about El Talon: Many people, including some unfriendly family members, think that I only want to help El Talon and the Carribean coast of Colombia. Those that know me well know that that is completely FALSE! I am aware that Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America, all of Colombia (including Valle del Cauca) has poverty, the United States has homelessness, eastern Europe has high poverty rates, etc. My biggest wish is to be able to help the whole world, but we all begin somewhere and El Talon is my beginning and future. I have the necessary support (both family wise and financially), experience, and connections to direct a successful project.
Finally, a break: The month of August was a busy one and I even had to travel to my hometown Los Angeles shortly after I arrived from Colombia. My grandmother (Abuela Ceci), is not doing well and I went to see her with my mother. I also began college this week. I will slow down with my campaign until January 2010 so I can get used to my new life as a college student, settle down, and visit my grandmother frequently. However, I do plan to send about 20-30 boxes of clothes to Colombia and it will be distributed by a family member under the Beyond the Wall name.
